Meet the SG: Brad Robinson

Brad Robinson is one of the newest members of the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework Steering Group (SG). Originally from Sydney, Brad has built deep experience in the feedlot sector, working both nationally and internationally.
Now Sustainability Manager at Mort & Co, Brad wants to use his position on the SG to help tell a more complete story of the beef industry, especially the role feedlots play.
“The industry’s got a story to tell, and I want to make sure that the feedlot sector is part of that.
“There’s a lot of great work happening, and we need to ensure that we are telling that story if we want to develop the industry further.”
Brad is focused on making sure the feedlot sector fits into the supply chain in Australia and what they are doing to benefit the wider industry.
Ensuring the SG objectives are based around metrics that accurately measure the information needed and communicating the need-to-know information are driving factors for Brad as part of the SG.
“It’s important to me to make sure we are identifying metrics that allow us to track objectives and then communicate about them, and that we stay on track and focused on what we set out to achieve.“
Futureproofing and profitability
When asked about what the term ‘sustainability’ means to him, Brad spoke about futureproofing.
“To me, a big part of sustainability is making sure that whatever we are doing today ensures that business or industry can continue to do things in the future.”
For Brad, that starts with profitability.
“Profitability is always central. Any decision we make, we need to ensure that we do consider it through a profitability lens. This is something that I do day-to-day in my role at Mort & Co.”
The importance of also viewing decisions through a social and environmental lens is also something Brad highlighted.
“All of these different lenses, put together, are what gives us a well-rounded view of sustainability.”
A reference point
Brad utilises the ABSF as a reference point of priorities for the wider industry.
“For anyone inside or outside of the industry, the ABSF provides a reference that we can show where the industry is focused and the things that we are doing in the areas to elevate what we do.
“It’s not always going to be good news stories, there are things that we need to do better. Having everything in one document allows us to better understand how we can make improvements
