Global alignment, local value: GRSB updates from Nashville

When Patrick Hutchinson, Chair of the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework (ABSF), travelled to Nashville for the recent board meeting of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) board meeting, the objective was clear: strengthen global alignment while ensuring sustainability frameworks continue to deliver practical value for Australian producers.
What is the GRSB?
The GRSB is a global, multi-stakeholder platform focused on continuous improvement in beef sustainability. It brings together regional roundtables, supply chain companies and producer organisations to develop shared principles and indicators covering environmental stewardship, animal welfare, people and community, and economic viability.
Importantly, the GRSB does not create certification schemes or prescribe production systems. Instead, it develops globally recognised metrics and represents the beef sector in international forums, including the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) processes. This coordinated, science-based approach ensures the industry has a strong and credible voice as regulators, investors and multinational customers shape sustainability expectations.
As Mr Hutchinson explained, the GRSB’s role is to ensure beef is represented clearly and consistently in global discussions.
“GRSB plays an important role in making sure the global beef industry can present a clear, credible position on sustainability when engaging with regulators, investors and major customers”.
Direction under the new president
Mr Hutchinson said that while Justin Sherran has commenced as the new president of the GRSB, there has been no major shift in policy direction. Instead, the focus is on delivery.
“Key to what we’re working on with the new president is simply getting work that’s been started completed.”
Priorities include sharpening global advocacy and improving alignment between industry frameworks, such as the ABSF, with commercial sustainability programs. The goal is coherence, ensuring global engagement reflects both industry and supply chain initiatives.
Key discussion points
Board discussions in Nashville focused on:
- progress against regional sustainability goals
- development of globally relevant metrics for emissions, nature-positive outcomes, grassland management and herd health
- understanding consumer expectations across different markets
- advocacy in response to emerging regulatory and investor requirements.
There Board also recognised the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, highlighting the critical stewardship role grazing systems play worldwide.
What does this mean for Australia?
Australia continues to be recognised as a leader in areas including pain-relief adoption, emissions research and transparent sustainability reporting. At the same time, growing global scrutiny around issues such as deforestation reinforces the importance of clear, evidence-based communication.
For producers, the implications are practical. Global customers and investors are increasingly referencing common sustainability concepts, and demonstrating alignment with credible global indicators can support market access and brand value.
GRSB’s work helps ensure that international metrics can be mapped against frameworks such as the ABSF, reducing the risk of fragmented or duplicated reporting requirements.
Critical steps ahead
Ongoing success for global sustainable beef will depend on:
- strong alignment between global indicators and domestic reporting frameworks
- effective coordination with supply chain partners
- practical tools that support efficient, streamlined reporting.
For producers, the call to action is straightforward: stay informed. Understanding how global sustainability expectations shape markets is an essential part of managing commercial risk.
Global Conference on Sustainable Beef in Brisbane
The biennial Global Conference on Sustainable Beef, which brings together reporting and insights from participating regions, is scheduled to be held in Brisbane later this year.
Hosting the conference positions Australia at the centre of the global sustainability conversation. It provides a valuable opportunity to showcase progress under the ABSF, demonstrate alignment with international indicators, and engage directly with global supply chain, policymakers and investors.
